Overthinking: How to Quiet Your Mind and Find Some Peace

Why do we overthink?

Overthinking is sometimes our mind's way of trying to make sense of things, find answers or protect us from uncertainty. We might believe that if we think about something enough, we'll find a solution or prevent something from going wrong.

For some of us, overthinking can be linked to anxiety, past experiences, a fear of getting things wrong or a need for reassurance. While thinking things through can be helpful, it can become difficult when we find ourselves caught in the same cycle of thoughts without feeling any closer to an answer.

How can we manage overthinking?

Rather than trying to force your thoughts to stop, you might begin by gently noticing when you're getting caught up in them.

Try bringing your attention back to the present moment. Take a walk, notice your surroundings or give yourself permission to pause without needing to resolve everything immediately.

It can also help to ask yourself: Am I trying to solve something, or am I going over it again because I feel anxious?

There isn't always an answer available to us, and learning to sit with a little uncertainty can take time. Be patient with yourself. You don't have to challenge every thought or find a solution to every worry.

Finding a way forward

If overthinking is affecting your sleep, relationships or ability to enjoy everyday life, counselling can offer a space to explore what's happening beneath the surface.

From a person-centred perspective, there is no judgement or expectation that you should think or feel differently. Instead, counselling offers an opportunity to understand yourself more deeply, explore the patterns that may be keeping you stuck and discover what feels right for you.

You don't have to quieten every thought to find a little peace. Sometimes, it begins with understanding yourself with greater kindness and learning that not everything needs to be figured out today.

If you would like support, I offer a free, no-obligation 15-minute initial call to explore whether counselling with me might feel right for you.
